Mona however changed with the disappearance of her tormentor Alison DiLaurentis one summer over labour day. With some tips and a plan Mona along with Hanna Marin a friend of her bully who was bullied herself by the girl. Called Hefty Hanna. Mona turned Hanna into the new IT girl of the school, helping her lose the weight, turning her into a doll in a lot of ways. An Ali doll. Mona had made herself a friend and she was content to sit as second to Hanna. Things could have been fine there. But they couldn't be. Because under the surface there is another Mona. A different one. And a darker one She suffers from what could be best described as a personality disorder so most of her decisions are reckless, impulsive and self-serving. Shoplifting and hacking into school databases are the tamer examples of her often illegal impulsiveness but she also has a tendency to exploit people, too. She spent years planning and scheming to hurt the Liars and she relished it. It was one very very long psychotic break from years of lack of treatment. She didn’t ask for help because she didn’t know she was sick.
She's capable of a lot of awful things but she's not a sociopath. She feels, she emotes, and frankly a lot of what she did is because of that, because she needed her friendship with Hanna. She needed the stability.
Mona is highly intelligent, in many ways a genius, She is able to charm her way out of most things, even going from loser to popular to crazy to repentant and back to popularity. But that doesn't make her secure inside, that doesn't make it easier to feel any different and definitely doesn't stop the paranoia that somehow it will all be taken away from her. Ultimately, she wants to be loved. As time goes on she does change somewhat, still ultimately self serving but she turns to be someone who helps the liars. It of course takes them a long time to warm to this, and they don't trust her. She doesn’t blame them and accepts that she might always be on the outside looking in, she did a lot of damage to those girls. But as it turns out she was as much a pawn as any of them as what had been her game was taken and used against her too.
She is definitely more stable than before. That ugly darker Mona more easily hidden now than she was before. Meds keep her stable and she’s been attending therapy regularly, though she jokes that a career as a political advisor to a Republican Senator is way more proof of her mental health issues than anything she ever did as A.

Blue Bubbles tasted neither blue nor bubbly. It tasted of mint.
A Mojito. A really really well made one. She looked up confused at the bartender. “But, I could have just ordered a Mojito?” she mused but the bartender had moved on to someone else at the bar. She couldn’t deny it was pretty cool to have a Mojito that didn’t look anything like what it should be and had no mint leaves at all. But she wanted to know how! How it worked, how it was even possible. She’d have to figure it out but she had only been here for a day. Oh she was staying. Getting away from Rosewood, from AD, from all of it. It was a damn dream come true.
She wanted to forget the past, and once she knew she would go back to that point and the others would be okay, she figured this was a good place to do that. She could get away from Loser Mona once and for all. Oh she wasn’t stupid, she knew how fiction worked, though why anyone would ever want to know their story was beyond her, it was so beyond fantastical she wouldn’t ever have imagined it published or picked up for a series. Her life was a soap opera trope. And she knew it. Yes people would know her history but she’d looked into who was here and she was so far from the worst offender. There were genuinely dangerous people here.
So a little girl who had gone a bit crazy and hurt her friends...maybe she’d be forgiven here. Maybe she could make other friends here. It could all be different, starting with the freaky Mojito. She’d get used to it. To all of it.
And who knows, maybe she’d get the others into theatre.
